KLCC is a self-contained, city-within-a-city. The integrated mixed-use development provides more than 1.67 million sq. meters (18 million sq. feet) of commercial, retail, hotel, convention, residential, and entertainment facilities. The winning Masterplan submitted by Klages, Carter, Vail & Partners delineated the site into 22 freehold lots located around a 20-hectare (50-acre) park.
The KLCC project is being implemented in phases. Phase One was launched in 1992 comprising:
- the 88-storey PETRONAS Twin Towers (Completed)
- Suria KLCC shopping centre (Completed)
- the 49-storey Menara Maxis (Completed)
- the 30-storey Menara ExxonMobil (Completed)
- the 32-storey Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur Hotel (Completed)
- a 20-hectare (50-acre) Public Park (Completed)
- two District Cooling Centres (Completed)
- a Mosque (Completed)
Phase Two development, launched in 2003 and under construction:
- Residential
- Business Hotel (Open in 2005)
- More cafés, food court, food stalls, and restaurants (Open in 2005)

- Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (Open in 2005)
The latest addition to the KLCC development precinct will be the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. Planned to attract regional and international conventions, trade shows, public exhibitions, dinner functions and sporting events; the centre comprises a 3,000-seat plenary hall, 500-seat theatre, 110,000 square feet (10,000 square metres) of exhibition space, large conference halls, grand ballroom, banquet hall and 19 meeting rooms. Complementary facilities to be provided include VVIP suites, media room, business centre, bridal suites, prayer rooms, medical room, AV production rooms, concierge and luggage rooms.
- Aquaria@KLCC (Open in 2005)
Located on Basement 1 and 2, the AQUARIA@KLCC is designed to be a next generation aquarium that showcases exceptional "education and entertainment" elements. The "Discovery Zone", where the latest technologies will be employed to enhance the aquarium experience, is a truly unique and a world first in the extensive use of multi-media technologies to integrate technology, education and entertainment in the aquarium experience. Malaysian mountains, rainforest rivers, mangrove swamps, coastal areas, natural creatures and marine ecosystem will be the main focus of the aquarium. A moving "walkway" transports the visitors through the waters of the ocean reef and into the deep-blue sea where massive sharks, rays and electric eels are just some of over 3,000 fish that are only feet away from visitors. Those adventurous enough can "Dive-with-the-sharks" and the "Weird and Wonderful" collection of exhibits are housed in an underwater scientific research station. The AQUARIA@KLCC is designed to make education, marine research and entertainment a lasting, meaningful and fun experience.
